Bernadette Namatovu, PMHNP-BC

PSYCHIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER – Chicago West Loop, IL

Bernadette Namatovu, PMHNP-BC  is a nurse practitioner at Relief Mental Health in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, providing psychiatry services to adolescents (aged 12 and older) and adults. With a comprehensive background in treating a broad spectrum of mental health diagnoses, including anxiety, behavioral issues, depression, suicidal ideation, grief, and mood disorders, her expertise is particularly focused on medication management and SPRAVATO® treatment.

Psychiatric medication management involves evaluating, prescribing, and monitoring medications to alleviate symptoms of mental health diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. This process includes regular assessments to adjust dosages and medications as needed to ensure optimal efficacy and minimize side effects.

SPRAVATO®, a nasal spray containing esketamine, is used for treatment-resistant depression. It is administered under the supervision of a healthcare professional in a clinical setting, with patients being monitored for at least two hours post-administration to ensure safety and effectiveness. Bernadette’s approach ensures that patients receive personalized, evidence-based care tailored to their specific needs.

Bernadette brings a wealth of specialized insights to her practice, particularly for Christians, Muslims, immigrants, and patients from Asian, Black, Hispanic and Latino backgrounds. She is adept at supporting single parents, veterans, those committed to racial justice, and LGBTQ+ patients. As a first-generation immigrant fluent in Luganda, Bernadette intimately understands the complexities and challenges associated with establishing a new life in a foreign country.

Bernadette’s approach to patient care is characterized by attentive listening and a thorough understanding of each patient’s unique story to identify likely triggers. She meticulously reviews each patient’s treatment history to discern what has been effective or ineffective in the past and collaborates with them to set clear goals for their treatment.

Her academic credentials include a Master of Science in psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner from Walden University in Minnesota and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Northern Illinois University. Bernadette is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and actively volunteers on medical missions. She also holds certifications in CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.

In her practice, whether providing psychiatric services or guiding patients through psychedelic treatment, Bernadette ensures patients can access the full range of services offered by Relief Mental Health, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and talk therapy.
